Object Detail

Brief description
This ceiling is by muralist and painter Augustus Faust. The motifs are related to common symbols of the late Victorial period. There are relationships between approaches with this mural and those of Augusto Lorenzini and, like Lucien Henry, he used the waratah motif and Australian flowers for mural subject matter.

Faust migrated in the 1870s with his Grandmother, father and siblings, joining an uncle in Milton. He moved to Sydney. One of his residences was 27 Galloway Street Parramatta. This mural was a companion piece for three rooms of murals. There are two other related objects in the collection - a diary and a length of mural frieze on cloth (linen).

Faust also did commissions for the Catholic Church in the Sydney region. He appears in the Sands directory as a painter.
