Brief description
This series comprises Alienation Notices - Notices of Sale or Transfer of Rateable Land, Parramatta City Council. Under Section 144 sub-section 10 of the Local Government Act No 56 1906 owners of rateable land were liable for payment or rates until notice of sale or transfer is provided to Council. Section 163 of the 1919 Local Government Act, required a rateable person, trustee executor, administrator, or mortgagee to inform council within one month of the transfer of land ownership. The standard form contains the name and address of the owner; location of the property; measurements; purchase price; date of sale; name and address of purchaser. From 1913 to 1944 applications forms were received and kept by Council. Registers were introduced in 1940 which recorded the Notice number; date received and entered; situation of land; name of owner giving notice; name and address of purchaser; sale price; assessment number; and remarks. Entries were added chronologically. No indexes apart from an incomplete index in the first register. There is a cross over period from 1940-1944 where the applications and Register entries exist simultaneously. After 1944 to 1973 only the registers remain. Following the amalgamation of Dundas and Granville Councils with Parramatta in 1948, the registers, for some of the time combined all the wards and other times kept separate registers for each ward. To find a notice, knowledge of the date the notice was received by Council needs is required - at times noted in the valuation books (PRS13) as "A/N number/year". These records are original and they have not been digitised. There is a gap in the records between 1974 and 1979. From 1979-1985 the series is made up of microfiche images of application forms. These records are original and they have not been digitised.
