William George Tremain was born on 29 November 1887 in Keppel Street, Bathurst in a two storey building near the Victoria Flour Mill (personal recollection from yellow notebook in personal papers).
William was one of 5 children born to Reuben R and Jane (nee ?) Tremain. Reuben Tremain’s parents were Elizabeth (nee ?) and William Tremain. William was born in St Teath, Camelford, Cornwall England c1831 and migrated to Australia with his family c1856.
Reuben and Jane’s children in birth order were (birthdates/years to be confirmed as some years recorded in William’s notebook are at odds with NSW BDM registration dates):

1. Herbert Roy born at Bathurst on 4th February 1884 died 15th May 1967 at Tamworth Hospital. Buried in the Lawn Cemetery married Edith Isabell Studte (spelling varies) in Tamworth on 31st March 1920

2. Reuben Robert born 7th May 1885* at Bathurst died 23rd June 1966 at his home in Long Jetty Cremated at Rookwood Cemetery. (previously resided at 7 William Street Granville?). He married Amy Peck in 1908. They had 2 children Ruby and George. Amy died on the 10th of January 1937. (William noted the birth year as 1886 however the NSW Registry indicates this birth was registered in 1885).

3. William George was born 29th November 1887 at Bathurst. He died in Parramatta in February 1988 at the age of 100. He married Ruby Australia Peck (Amy nee Peck’s sister) in 1916. Ruby passed away at 3:40pm on Wednesday 16th October 1957 (William recorded this in the Mayfair notepad in his personal papers). Financial accounts William kept record Ruby’s death at his sister’s home in Hazelbrook. William and Ruby had no children by their marriage and were foster parents to Athol Walker (the son of Ruby and Amy’s sister, Lucy and her husband Amos Walker married in 1904 to be further verified).

4. Elizabeth Emma Tremain born at Bathurst 4th July 1890*. (William noted the birth year as 1891 however the NSW Registry indicates this birth was registered in 1891). Elizabeth married ? Collins. Died

5. Vera Martha Tremain born at Girthvill on 1st or 12th March 1895*. (William noted the birth year as 1894 then struck it out to record 1895. The NSW Registry indicates this birth was registered in 1894 at Blayney). Martha married R Bloomfield. In his notebook William records her death as “Sunday 8PM June 5 1983. Born at Perthvill 1895. Age 88 years”

6. On a slip of paper inserted at this page in his notebook, William also records the death, along with his brothers Herbert and Reuben, of John William Tremain as “Died suddenly in Sydney 26th July 1968. Cremated at Northern Suburbs Crematorium.” (Relationship to be confirmed as John is also noted in Reuben Snr’s death notice).

A review of William’s personal papers and notebooks reveals he was living at “St Teath” 64 Boundary Street Parramatta possibly prior to 1st January 1926 until his death at the age of 100 in February 1988.
He made 3 or 4 attempts to write an outline of his life in the notebooks and notepads he kept to itemise financial accounts. He lists his working life, the birth and death dates of his parents and siblings. The smallest notebook refers to his retirement from Brunton’s Flour Mill on 20th April 1955 “on acc of sickness of the wife”. This page is bookmarked with a poignant clipping from the Readers Digest, May 1957 titled Lifetime of Love. William’s wife Ruby died on the 16th of October 1957 at 3:40pm.
