Brief description
One of two large metal watering cans used by Bill Gay in his market gardens.

Large metal watering can with ropes inside used by local market gardener, Bill Gay. His father George Louie Gay established a market garden on leased land at Rose Bay and in the 1920s, relocated to Guildford after council reclaimed the land at Rose Bay. Bill and his wife lived and worked at the market garden. A wide variety of vegetables were grown there and the family lived off their produce during the difficult days of the 1930s depression. Bill eventually took over his fathers’ market garden and maintained it until the 1950s when the land was bought by Parramatta Council and turned into a park.
