Brief description
Image shows the front of the market building around the time of its opening. This site may have been part of 30 Phillip Street which had a house named “Ellimatta”. (Elimatta is an Aboriginal word meaning 'my home' (Source: “Aboriginal Words of Australia” by A.H. & A.W. Reed). Ellimatta was owned by Mrs Shepherd Smith and then John Brown Smith a produce merchant, former alderman of Parramatta and a sergeant major in the Parramatta Lancers. The land was subdivided in 1916? and factory later built. In the 1920s it was a furniture factory and in 1931 it became the farmers market that operated from 1931 until mid 1940s. The land was owned by David Frater and Harold Saunders.
