Reproduction from "Historic Parramatta, The Cradle of Australia" : "An Astronomical Observatory was founded here 2nd. May, 1822, by Sir Thomas MacDougall Brisbane, K.C.B., F.R.S., Governor of N.S.W.. This obelisk was erected in 1880 to mark the position of the Transit Instrument in that Observatory. What is known as the Round House was originally the Governor's old bath house, the water for which was pumped from the river below."
